32’ Atkin Eric Ketch Starshine. This Colin Archer-inspired ketch is 32 feet, 1 inch in overall length; 27 feet, 6 inches on the water line. With 11 feet of beam and 5 feet of draft, Starshine is roomy and has full headroom throughout. It was a liveaboard and cruised the Pacific Northwest for 30 years before being stored under cover on land in 2010. Starshine has not been surveyed recently, and details here are according to observation and some experience with the boat over the decades. Starshine seems to have been deregistered around 2010, though there is a registration number carved into the deck beam at the forward end of the cabin. We believe the hull is cedar on oak and it is heavily built. The bilges appear to have been tarred and have been kept moist so there is little movement in the conventionally-caulked seams. The fasteners appear to be bronze, since there is no evidence of rust or weeping. The keel appears to be lead, with bronze or monel keel bolts. Starshine has a jib-headed ketch rig with stainless wire rigging. The masts and rigging are stored under cover with the boat. The decks appear to have been glassed and appear to be in good shape. There is a single 12” by 18” repair to the deck at the gunnel near the cockpit that is unfinished. The interior has been simplified, making a thorough survey of the inside of the hull an easy job. Fuel and water tanks have been removed and are stored under cover with the boat. The four-cylinder Perkins diesel has been removed and is no longer with the boat. Propeller, shaft, cutlass bearing, stuffing box and engine logs are all in place and seem to be in good shape. There is a gimballed diesel oven/stove in storage with the boat, and a head that is installed near the v-berth. The Atkin Eric is a beautiful and capable design, and Starshine herself appears in some of Kiff Holland’s work. This is a large project, but because the owner spent the last few years cleaning it out we think it offers a potential buyer a transparent view of what the job requires, stem to stern.
