I grow over 50 different varieties of willows at Willow Wood Farm. This is the time of year to plant and coppice willows. (Coppicing is an traditional technique for producing straight unbranched willow rods for use - and is simply cutting the willow down, almost to the ground, at this time of year) Willows are used to make wreaths, obelisks, arbors, baskets, living willow structures, living fences. Some willows have catkins before their leaves ( pussy willows) that are an early source of food for bees. They provide extraordinary winter and early spring colour ( rod colour) and rival anything else in the garden at that time. Cut pussy willows and curly willows are traditionally used for display. Willows are very easy to grow from cuttings. Cuttings for growing willows are 1.75 per stem. Rods for growing or using in structures are also available.
