Self Help Group Facilitator - MS Society

The MS Society of Canada is looking for an individual with the skills and interest necessary to facilitate support group for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Victoria BC at Retirement Concepts - Retirement & Senior Living at their Selkirk Senior Village location. Responsibilities: The facilitator will need to foster a safe, supportive environment so that group members will feel comfortable dealing with their issues and concerns regarding the ways in which MS affects their lives. - Facilitating group - Coordinating group meetings & sending reminder email/phone call to members - Standard setting and modeling of respectful behaviour - Ensuring that all members are given a fair opportunity to express themselves while keeping the group on time - Dependent on group needs, utilizing MS Society educational materials and/or contacting educational workshop facilitators to lead educational sessions for the group. - Liaising with the MS Society Community Services Coordinator. Skills Required: - Ability to work independently and to take a leadership role - Experience with and understanding of group process and group dynamics - Empathic behaviour including active listening skills - Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully - Proficient at giving information but not advice - Knowledgeable in the self- help group model - Consent to a Background Check (Criminal Record) Orientation: Orientation (1.5hr or longer if required) to include: * background information on the Society * information related to MS * initial first few group meetings co- facilitated with MS Society Community Services Coordinator Time Commitment: - One year commitment - 2-3 hours monthly Supervisory Relationship / liaison: The volunteer will be supervised by Programs and Services staff and will liaise with assigned Community Services Coordinator with regards to MS information and individual and group support..
