Restricted edition aviation art print Stirlings Outward Bound by artist ROBERT TAYLOR and signed in pencil by HAMISH MAHADDIE. This print depicts RAF Short Stirling bombers during a operational sortie . The Short Stirling was the RAF's first four-engined bomber but was handicapped by a low operational ceiling. Thus, Stirling crews spent much of their time flying through the flak. While flying the Stirling, Mahaddie had been attacked by a Ju88 nightfighter. After evading the attack, he managed to bring the aircraft home and subsequent inspection of the aircraft revealed 174 cannon shell holes. Mahaddie appropriately named that particular aircraft C for Colander. Over 2000 Stirlings provided stout service for the RAF in a variety of roles throughout the course of WW II. Group Captain T.G. "Hamish" Mahaddie (deceased) was a legend in RAF Bomber Command and served with the elite Pathfinder group. He became involved with the film industry as an aviation consultant working on many films including the Battle of Britain starring Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, and Robert Shaw. For this late 1960s film he sought out and acquired an incredible number of Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire, and Messerschmitt fighters (actually Spanish-built Buchons with Merlin engines), as well as Heinkel 111 bombers (also fitted with Merlin engines). Overall print size is about 20 by 14 inches. The print is not numbered and is not signed by Robert Taylor as issued. The print was restricted to an edition of 500 signed by Mahaddie. There is no COA as issued. In very good used condition, a slight scuff in the coated stock that will be hard to see when framed. Stored flat in acid-free materials. From a smoke and pet free home.
