Crafted in 15 carat yellow gold, it features fancy-links with a hinged clasp at its mid-point. At 63 inches (160cm) in length, it is very long and can be wrapped up to three times around the neck. Guard chains were an essential part of Victorian ladies apparel; they attached muffs (a cylinder of fur or other warm material, used to keep hands warm in winter), a watch, scissors, a buckle fastener, eyeglass, or a precious locket, to the central mid-point clasp. 15ct gold was the only a legal standard of gold in British jewellery between 1854 and 1931. This means that any piece of 15ct antique gold jewellery from Britain dates somewhere between 1854 and 1931 and you have a genuine piece of antique or vintage jewellery.
