BLUEBERRIES and a BLUE Berry They say that good things come in small packages — and that's especially true for the blueberry. This little super-fruit packs a serious punch as an antioxidant powerhouse and a disease fighter. Here’s just 3 of our star 🌟 performers at Michell Valley Plants: • The BONUS Blueberry is a mid season variety – has excellent winter hardiness – great productivity. Bushes are vigorous and upright. BONUS berries are very large yet they still have a rich blueberry flavour. • DWARF TOPHAT Blueberry is (like the name) compact, short (just 2’ high) and just adorable. Snowy white, bell-shaped flowers are followed by pea sized to large, firm and flavourful, powder blue berries. As an added feature, you’ll enjoy the fiery, crimson red foliage in the Fall. TOPHAT is perfect for containers (patio or balconies); or, defined border plantings. Excellent for bonsai too! • PATRIOT Blueberry gives an early-season harvest of large, aromatic, tasty fruit and is a superb variety for both container and landscape use. It's cold-hardy and widely adaptable. Nice mid size at just 3-5’. Notes: • For best results plant 2 different varieties (that bloom at the same time) next to each other. • Blueberries prefer acidic soils. A fail-safe way to grow blueberries in almost any soil is to incorporate peat moss into the planting medium. • Once established, blueberries like acid fertilizers such as rhododendron or azalea formulations. And now for the … • HONEYBERRY (Haskap) which is not a blueberry bush, but a berry that is blue, so I’m including it here. Like the blueberry, Haskap berries are high in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties and they’re blue too, so there we have it. With its sour-sweet flavour, it makes a delicious snack, with a taste that has been described as a cross between a blueberry, blackberry and raspberry.
