Thunder in the Morning Calm: The Royal Canadian Navy in Korea 1950-1955 by Edward C. Meyers Hardcover, 1992, 248 pages. The outstanding contribution of the Canadians who served with the UN Peacekeeping force during the Korean War is one which, regrettably, has received little attention. Between July 1950 and August 1955, a total of eight Canadian destroyers performed 21 single tours of duty manned by more than 6,000 sailors. In recounting the efforts of the many who served in those ships, the author depicts a navy determined to assert its distinct Canadian identity. His is an account of a war viewed from the vantage point of the lower deck; of one whose own experiences and those of his shipmates are testimony to the fact that those who served with the RCN in Korea acquitted themselves admirably and in a manner that has long deserved the recognition and respect of all Canadians.
