Rexx is approximately 1.5 years old although he acts like a 5 month old puppy. It's evident that he was well fed with his previous owners but they certainly didn't put any training into him. He's a bit tubby so he's on a diet. He's not showing any signs of neglect or physical abuse so he's a blank slate as far as training is concerned. You don't have to try and undo the trauma of physical abuse because he isn't displaying any. Rexx is very food motivated and is a sponge for learning new things when you've got treats. Right now we're working on sit, down, place, look, wait and treat training to potty on command. All are a work in progress and he's getting better at these commands daily. He definitely acts like a young puppy and that's just a lack of training and guidance. He shows zero aggression toward people. He's a bit mouthy at the moment like a young puppy would be. He's not biting but he will put his mouth on you. I just say 'no' and he immediately stops. He sometimes air snaps when working on his wait command if he breaks. He gets excited to come in the house and if he breaks his 'sit and wait' until released, that's when he air snaps. It's like an excitement thing. I have not had him around children. So far, he will let you do anything to him and there is no place on his body that appears to be off limits to touch. When it was bath time he was loosely tethered with a leash and other than shake on us, he did extremely well. He has a fuzzy puppy coat that is being worked on to get all of the loose fur out. He was kennelled for 37 days with another dog and they were fine together. He's only been with my pup once since being here and he did very well for about 30 minutes and then decided he wanted the toy that my pup was trying to play tug with. I broke off the play session and have decided to hold off with them meeting again until he's been neutered. I think he's got a bit too much testosterone running around in him at the moment. He's got one testicle that hasn't dropped so he will go in for his neuter, which will be more like a spay (surgery through the abdomen) on May 31st. Rexx is adoptable or a foster situation. If he has an adoption interest, my rescue will be paying for his neuter. This boy should go to a home with people that have working breed experience and know the importance of having these dogs work. By work, that could mean wearing a backpack, learning tricks, carrying a ball, scent work to find pieces of food. Participating in dog sports (agilty, rally o, scent work, disc work) isn't necessary but I know he would eventually love doing it. The list is endless. Because he's young he needs consistent guidance to get a solid foundation of manners. He is currently 68 pounds. Rexx has all vaccines that are up to date and he will be neutered on May 31st. He's crate trained and automatically goes into his crate at bed time or any time I'm leaving the house. He likes to sleep on a dog bed when I'm home and equally lays on the floor to sleep. I can't say for sure if he's house trained because I get him out often. He's never gone to the bathroom in my house or his crate. He's a toy dog and empties out two toy boxes pretty much daily. At times he will steal something and trot off proudly but he always gets caught! Right now he's really into the antlers and nylabones. I haven't started leash walking him off property because I want to get some engagement with him before I tackle that job. If you are interested in this youngster or have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Adoption fees are tax deductible.
