The John Howard Society of Victoria is a dynamic, innovative social service organization that strives to create safe, healthy, and inclusive communities for all. Our goal is to help individuals achieve greater independence by providing support with housing, life-skills, education, employment, and community-based services. This position is responsible for recruiting, screening, case managing and supporting self-identified indigenous clients who are residents of Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre (VIRCC). We are looking for someone with patience, compassion, insight, and good judgment to work with self-identified indigenous participants. The ideal candidate will be excited about the opportunity to really make a difference in the lives of self-identified indigenous participants and assist with transitioning residents back into their community. Here are some of the things you’ll be doing: Collaborate with VIRCC programs staff to identify program participants and engage with residents to promote Sacred Cedar Program Complete intake and assessment of the potential participants Establish ongoing relationships with participants Work with participants within VIRCC, providing coaching and support During the job search process, in collaboration with the residents, establish an Employment Plan that will be the right fit for participants Provide the residents with ongoing employment support and training upon release Complete all reporting as per contract requirements and ensure Director of JHSV is aware and informed of progress, risks and opportunities. Engage with existing community organizations and employers, and develop new partnerships suitable for Sacred Cedar Participants, to ensure successful transition into employment Qualifications Diploma in Social Services or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and relevant experience working with Indigenous clients Experience working with vulnerable populations including those with mental health, addictions, and homelessness Excellent written and oral communication skills, dispute resolution and problem-solving skills Proficient in Microsoft Suite Strong administrative and analytical skills Requirements We require a criminal records and vulnerable sector check as well as someone with a Class 5 driver’s license and a reliable vehicle. Emergency First Aid is an asset but we will provide training to the successful candidate. The successful candidate will be required to work out of the VIRCC on Wilkinson Road, Victoria and John Howard Society Community Office in Bridge Street Victoria. The position is full time 40 hours per week (8:30 to 4:30 M – F, some flexibility may be required). Annual salary range is $51,729 to $58,240, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
