Cambridge Audio Azur 840C upsampling CD player, DAC and preamplifier. UPDATED: new, lower price and will also throw in a pair of high-quality, balanced audio cables ($100 value). Price is firm. The current 851C is the evolution of the 840, but some reviewers say the 840 is more musical than the 851. The 840C is clear, transparent and neutral sounding. It's very easy to listen this player. The soundstage is outstanding. It offers a host of inputs and outputs beyond those traditionally found on CD players. These connectivity options include: - two sets of digital inputs for connecting external digital sources (each input offers coax or TosLink optical jacks) - a set of digital outputs (again, the choice of coax or TosLink) - two sets of analogue outputs: one balanced, and one unbalanced Inside is a “Blackfin” 32-bit DSP chip running upsampling software to upsample 44.1kHz/16-bit digital signals (either from the internal CD transport or for processing external digital sources) to 384kHz/24-bit. Dual AD1955 24-bit DACs manage the digital-to-analogue conversion. The dual DACs split the left and right channels to create balanced analog outputs. The digital inputs allow you to take advantage of the built-in upsampling and to use the 840C as a DAC for two additional digital sources. You can even name the two digital inputs, with the name appearing on the 840C’s front-panel display when that input is selected. The digital outputs allow you to connect to an outboard DAC, if you prefer, after the internal upsampling. Finally, it is built like a tank. The power supply is massive, with a huge toroidal transformer; there are lots of filter caps and rows of power-supply voltage regulators; there are a whopping nineteen TO-3 regulators--about triple the number usually found in comparable CD players. To top it off, the 840C employs a custom transport mechanism that’s considerably beefier than standard-issue transports. It is in superb, like-new condition. Includes original packaging, manuals, power cable and remote. Comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home. If the ad is up, then it is still for sale.
