Kitchen & Culture – A Cooking Journey

Kitchen & Culture – A Cooking Journey image 1

Fighting Racism One Recipe at a time Kulea Culture Society is pleased to present Kitchen & Culture – A Cooking Journey. The initial Kitchen & Culture series is six monthly cooking classes featuring both Indigenous people and immigrants to Canada cooking and sharing their favourite dishes. This series of fun and useful hands-on cooking instruction builds bridges across our community through food and storytelling. Each session is taught by a local chef who will prepare a meal highlighting the wonderful tastes of their ethnic cuisine. They will share and teach how to prepare the dish as well as its history and significance, while telling their story of immigration and/or experiences of growing up in Canada. Hearing interesting stories while learning to prepare new foods connects people and decreases discrimination. In each of the cooking classes, participants register to cook alongside the chef from their own kitchen in a (virtual) live, interactive class taught through Zoom. Upon registration, participants will receive the recipe and a list of ingredients, supplies and other items they need to cook together with the local chef. Each month will feature a different chef and a different cuisine. It will be a fun chance to learn about the history and culture of the chef as well as to ask questions about the food, cooking techniques and culture. Thanks to generous help from community partners including Shaw TV, Community Kitchen Victoria Market and Vancity. Each 2-hour class only costs $20 or $75 for the entire series of 6.
