$85 · Early PEETZ 5" reel

A true Collector’s Item. An early version of this classic wood and brass sea reel, possibly dating to pre-WWII. Special features include: Wood handles Elegant bird-wing brass drag nut Early check spring of flat tempered-brass (almost certainly made by Boris Peetz.) 120-mm wooden drum has no inscribed rings, and features a central deep bowl protecting the drag nut. Wood is probably mahogany, no splits. Brass back-plate of drum. No label. Foot is screwed and soldered to the untapered strap. Foot is 70 mm long; one side is about 10 mm shorter than the other, but appears to have been made this way. No line-guard fitted Overall condition is good, with a patina throughout suggesting only occasional use, but if preferred the reel could be restored to near-new brightness. Note that few Peetz reels were made of mahogany during WWII as almost all supplies were bought for the construction of landing craft. Based on the design of the check mechanism, best guess for its age would be mid-1930s. Buyer is cautioned that Peetz reels were slow to change, and in many cases spools can be interchanged; the company would readily accept reels for repair or restoration. Some components may not be original although they are invariably of Peetz manufacture. It is possible that at some point the drum of this reel was replaced.
