Job Description VLC Kids French E-Reading Book Club Reading Volunteer - Job Description General Description The VLC Kids French E-Reading Book Club is for children in grades 2-5 who could benefit from extra French Immersion literacy support. Sessions take place twice a week for one hour at a time for a three week period (April 26 to June 18). French books are in electronic form, and are shared through a simple online tool. All volunteers get training on using the online platform, as well as literacy support by the our Child Literacy Coordinator. Experience has shown that cell phones and tablets are not sufficient for instruction, but rather laptops and desktops. The program is conducted in a way that is enjoyable to students, while gently nudging them to accept reading challenges, to push themselves to improve reading and to feel comfortable and confident in their achievements and overall skill level. Core Activities The specific duties of the Volunteer include: assisting children in reading French in groups of three, with a view to ensuring that the children are mastering the subject matter. Qualifications Some teaching assistance experience is desirable but not obligatory. Must feel comfortable in offering literacy support in the French language. The personal characteristics of the Volunteer should include a high level of patience, listening skills, and general supportiveness. Sensitivity to children's behaviour, and understanding their needs and adapting to them are critical. The Volunteer should be able to encourage and challenge children to excel in an engaging and low-stress manner. A Criminal Record Check is required, which can be facilitated through our office.
