Become a Volunteer! The VTRA relies largely upon volunteer support to make this program work. Through people's dedication and generosity, more than 140 children and adults with disabilities are able to ride every year. There are many opportunities that will enrich your life both personally and professionally. We are always looking for new volunteers to join our program. We get tremendous satisfaction from the work that we do and we have a little fun at it too! What Can Volunteers Do? Side Walker: Assisting riders with balancing and interpreting instructor directions. Horse Handler: Leading horses during lessons. Previous horse experience and assessment required. Fundraising: Assisting the board before and during events Tack Store Staff: Opening the tack store, selling tack. Knowledge of tack an asset Assistant Instructor: Previous experience in program and with horses an asset. Assisting with building projects Required Education, Skills and Qualifications No previous experience necessary (horses or disabilities), just a willingness to learn and general physicality. Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association (VTRA) formerly known as Victoria Riding for the Disabled, was formed in 1982 to provide a therapeutic riding experience to children and adults with disabilities from the Greater Victoria area. VTRA is a non-profit charitable organization that uses horseback riding as a recognized therapeutic aid for people with a wide range of physical, intellectual and learning disabilities. VTRA offers classes to more than 160 children and adults with disabilities that include cerebral palsy, down syndrome, autism, intellectual challenges, hearing or vision impairment, and many more. VTRA is made up of a volunteer board, a small paid staff and more than 100 volunteers who through their dedicated contribution of time enable these individuals to benefit from the therapeutic properties of horseback riding each week. Mission Statement Our mission is to enrich the lives of children and adults with disabilities through the provision of therapeutic horse-back riding programs and related activities.
