From the Golden Age of Trek steel comes the Trek 610, handbuilt with beautiful lugwork in Waterloo, Wisconsin. Reynolds 531 double-butted steel frame. Shimano 600 groupset which was the Ultegra of its time. Some non-original components include a Shimano sealed bearing bottom bracket to replace the loose-bearing unit that was a maintenance pain. Original wheelset was just plain worn out, replaced by a custom set utilizing similar vintage Campy hubs (overhauled with new cups, cones and bearings by Fairfield Bicycle), stainless spokes and Mavic Open Sport rims. Continental Ultra Sport tires. Shimano 600 derailleur comes with bike but was replaced by a vintage Dura-Ace unit. Wide-range 13 to 34 tooth 6-speed cogset; believe it or not, the Dura-Ace short cage derailleur handles the 34 tooth cog quietly with no complaints and smooth shifting. Original parts include, of course, frame and fork, Shimano 600 headset and brakes, aluminum stem and bars, Avocet saddle, fluted aluminum Laprade seatpost, and the star of the show, the Shimano 600 52-40 crankset, still one of the prettiest cranks ever made and probably the thing that convinced me to buy the unit from West Point cycles in Vancouver in the early 80s. Crank arms are 170mm, (as opposed to the industry standard 172.5) which I recently learned gives a person who is well-fitted for the bike a slightly higher cadence and more power. Fenders reveal that the bike was my much-loved commuter for many years (10 minutes Fairfield to downtown). Bike always always stored under cover and maintained fastidiously. Sadly, with the advent of integrated shifters and carbon frames I just don't ride it more than a few times a year. Therefore I'm looking for a good home for it with someone who appreciates the challenges and satisfaction of downtube shifting. $650 or nearest reasonable offer.
