The Annual Drag Ball Game 2019

The Annual Drag Ball Game 2019 image 1

FREE | ALL AGES Monday July 1 | 12 PM - 3 PM Location: Victoria West Park The Victoria Pride Society acknowledges that we serve our communities as visitors on the traditional territories of the WSÁNEĆ (Saanich), Lkwungen (Songhees) and Wyomilth (Esquimalt) peoples of the Coast Salish Nation. One of Victoria Pride's signature events, the Memorial Drag Ball Game traces its roots back to 1993. A group of friends, several of them drag performers, were grieving the loss of many in the community from HIV/AIDS. They wanted a day to forget about that reality, about politics and to play a game. They have returned to that game every year since. Over time, more people have joined and the gathering founded on resilience has also become a celebration of community. Keeping the name to remain authentic to its roots, the Memorial Drag Ball Game now draws up to 1000 spectators who, every year, let go of differences, embrace fun and absurdity, and just come for the DRAG of it! This year, come out and enjoy what will be a perfect sunny day while watching (or playing) a game of ball in drag! Lastly, we ask to help keep the air clear for everyone by respecting the city bylaw against smoking in parks. See you at the park! WANT TO JOIN THE GAME? Everyone is welcome to play! Simply choose whether you'd like to play for The Queens or The Kings and pick a name for your drag persona. To qualify, the Queens traditionally need to be wearing lipstick and a wig and the Kings traditionally need to have facial hair... but since drag is all about gender-bending we are flexible! We'll also have some items for you to borrow should you need some assistance! If you're planning to play, please arrive early so that you have enough time to check-in. ABOUT THE VICTORIA PRIDE SOCIETY The Victoria Pride Society organizes events in accordance with its mission to inspire full inclusion within the Pride Community and society at large through visibility, collaboration, ongoing conversation and celebration. We envision a world free of discrimination, violence, and ignorance, in which all people, through education, equality, and safety are empowered to lead full, authentic lives.
