$200 · Taking reservations for small litter purebred Ossabaw Island piglets

Purebred, PigTrace registered Ossabaw Island sow, mated with a purebred, PigTrace registered Ossabaw Island boar, from a different genetic backgrounds / different stock farms in the Cowichan. She's given birth to her first litter December 28. Piglets will be weaned at 8+ weeks, and so available March 1. Livestock conservancy considers this a critical breed (https://livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/Ossabaw), and they are amazing eating, because they are descended as a breed from the original Iberian hogs brought to North America by the Spanish (https://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/06/dining/on-the-trail-of-fine-ham-first-plant-an-acorn.html). They are not beginner hogs, and they are not suitable for pets. They are very smart and closer to wild boars than other breeds. They mature slowly. You need excellent fencing and your wits about you. But if you're looking for premium breeding stock, we expect to have 2-3 piglets available for sale, for local folks interested in and able to help preserve this breed and its genetic diversity. We expect to more another time, so if you're not able now but would like to be on our email list in future, please let us know. We are regenerative, carbon-sequestration farmers, and the sow and boar have been raised on 1/3 of an acre, free range. No antibiotics. The piglets have not been sexed yet, as mama is still awfully protective, but we anticipate being able to release at least one boar and one sow. The boar piglet would not be castrated.
