CANON EF-S 17-85mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM Lens with Macro 0.35m/1.2ft is still being sold new for $479 +taxes. The problem with the lens is possibly something like an open circuit in the ribbon flex cable to the diaphragm assembly. Thus no longer allowing the auto focus to function properly. It just keeps on "trying" to focus and sometimes makes up its mind after a while. The manual focus works properly and everything else as far as I can tell. To have it repaired will probably cost around $150-$250. However, if someone is handy with electronic repairs, the parts would probably cost a fraction of that. Tutorials on line quote the cables costing around $30-$40. Reason for selling: I started having problems with the auto focus during a recent trip and I had to purchase a new lens for over $500. Now I am faced with either selling my new lens and /or having this one repaired or vice versa.
