Highly unusual and highly collectible — California Ware, Cats, Mattel. 5 inch pottery cats with Lucite bows produced by Elzac of California between 1941 and 1947. Price is for the pair. Both have original label. Both have no chips or damage. Bottom of feet show expected wear marks. From the Chipman California Pottery Scrapbook: "Elliot Handler and a financial partner named Zachary Zemby (hence the name "Elzac") started in Los Angeles in 1941. In 1944, a new business partnership was formed when Elzac foreman Matt Matson and Elliot Handler founded Mattel in nearby Hawthorne. Handler, who was an industrial designer, was enamored of Lucite and its potential, and Elzac produced costume jewelry, figurines, and other giftware that incorporated Lucite until about 1947."
