The familiar paper mache figures were made and handpainted in Bagni di Lucca, a small Tuscan village, where the Fontanini family had been making nativity sets and statuary for four generations. Using Simonetti's new design, Mario Fontanini headed up the family's first large scale production of the new figures by injecting "plastic", the new polymer, into molds. Thus the figures we know and love today, numbered and marked with the "spider", were born and became so popular that they replaced paper mache. They were made available in the USA when Roman, Inc. gained exclusive rights to distribute them here. The Fontanini process of hand painting was still detailed and intricate so that each figure conveys deep feeling. Since the 60's numerous variations of polymer resin Fontanini figures have been sold by Roman, Inc., but this 5 1/2" set was the "first" and the first to be sold in America."
