The Blackwatch is without a doubt one of the finest, serious small cruising boats to be found anywhere. Ocarina is hull #73 out of 81, built in 1980 by Bluewater Boatworks, Amarillo Texas. In 1992, she was purchased in Los Angeles from the son of the first owner and moved to Squamish. After her massive retrofit (>$40,000), she was featured in GoodOldBoat magazine (8 page article) Jan 1999, and on the May 2004 cover.
In 2010, Ocarina went to Gabriola with her third owner. In preparation for a big trip, I added a chart plotter, autohelm, and fuel filter. In 2012, I took this incredible boat on a fantastic 1200-mile voyage up the BC coast and across the Hecate to Haida Gwaii.
Ocarina is presently on dry land (Gabriola BC) and will spend her summer in Heritage Harbour, Vancouver Maritime Museum, where she has a slip for June, July and August. She is easy to handle, sails beautifully and effortlessly at 5 knots, draws only 2' (go places the big boats can't), simple systems (no winches for anchor or sheets, fridge or diesel motor), and can be trailered straight to the places you want to explore.
